One Line

Honing in on the concepts of intuition, improvisation and free play, this simple meditation began with a single mark and began a journey that no one could predict. Drawing stylizations from contour mapping, tree age-rings, and fingerprints, these works explore the act of creating spontaneous action and reaction. Once material expense and pre-meditation are stripped from the values of the process and creativity is allowed to flow, a single, drawn line would be create images of the abstract and subconscious. Inspired by emotions of the moment and reactions to the inner line drawn earlier, the creating mind abandons thoughts of the past and future to simply just be in the present. In accretion, these lines reveal subconscious patterns building off of what is already there.

This project began with many quick drawings on scratch paper to build familiarity to the process and stamina for the mental state. The final showpiece began with cheap newsprint paper and as it evolved, more paper was added until everything came full circle. The unplanned composition culminated in a seven foot tall and four foot wide drawing.
